The Former Soviet Union, the USSR, winner of a billion medals at the Olympics, KGB, dodgy accents in James Bond films. I shouldn’t idealise things. Although I end up doing so. It’s not easy seeing as (some) people were happier in those days. I should know better-two years of A-Levels history, most of it the tragic stuff; famine, purges, paranoia.

But there was education too, housing, clean water, jobs and relaxation in Sanatoriums. Not spas, facials and lemongrass infused towels. But utilitarian therapy for the working class, concert hall entertainment, priority for those with the hardest jobs. And for under 30 USD per person (luxury; 20 for standard)-board, three meals and ‘treatments’, you could get a glimpse of that old world.
