I am Ribbon

Sorry, say that again?

While we’re on an introspective roll, I’m letting Ms. Chew-Bose speak for me now. A relief for some as she is more enviably eloquent and courageous than I am, certainly more than I was at 28.

I’m glad she wrote this-living with the unpronounceable name (first and last), being first generation, always answering questions and explaining things. In primary school, I even went so far as to use a more ‘local’, less foreign sounding name in my religious classes until it all got too hot to handle…for an eight year old. I finally found a place where everyone was from everywhere with every kind of name and married a man who wants to take my last name as his nom de plume because he likes the sound of it. I got lucky perhaps, but I’d like to think that at some point I decided to get my act together and find a place where I could belong in some small way.

So I leave the rest to ‘just D’ who let her life be more than “…an accumulation of my misheard name…”

P.S: The kitchen is one of those less judgmental places I’ve discovered these days and would like to welcome back my little toaster oven!
